I am the youngest of five girls, and we moved a lot due to my dad’s job. I lived in four states before I turned five. Moving gave me experience with transition from an early age and a willingness to make new friends quickly. I believe it’s what ignited my love of creating change for the better.
We lived a middle class life until I was in middle school, when my parents went bankrupt. My mom took up the income earning reins in her late 50s, when, despite his best efforts, my dad couldn’t land another steady job. My mom had her nursing degree reinstated after a 40 year lapse.
By that time, I was the only daughter still living at home for two more moves, including a big one to Fort Walton Beach, Florida where we finally ended up in an apartment with the ugliest orange shag carpet. I mean really – I don’t think that carpet was ever in style! These changes and losses taught me resilience and more deeply instilled my belief that women are powerful human beings. My family’s financial struggles also gave me a healthy fear that, at any moment, I can be jobless and bankrupt. It’s something I hear in my clients, too, when they are up for a big a career change or running their own law firm or business. This fear can light a fire to achieve something more for yourself. Unfortunately, it can also stifle creativity and self-worth, getting in the way of committing to your dream.
One thing that has helped me get to where I am today: people asking me the right questions at the right time. Whenever I felt closed-off and couldn’t see a way forward, someone else would help me find a way. In 2004, when I didn’t get into law school the first time I applied and felt stuck in my job, someone asked, “Why can’t you just quit anyway?” Why not, indeed. That question lit a fire under me to reapply for law school while I traveled across the United States.

Four years later, I graduated with Great Distinction from McGeorge of School of Law, where I also met my husband. We moved to San Diego in September 2008, and have loved living and practicing law in this amazing city.

In my tenth year of practicing law, a business coach for attorneys helped me break free from a career at a law firm and open a successful solo practice. She asked me, “Why are you saying you can’t run your own practice?” We explored it, and it turns out, I was excellent at running my own practice. I knew I wanted to do that for other people, too.
